Branding Requirements

At Netflix, we want you to be able to create fantastic applications with the Netflix API. At the same time, we don't want users to get confused about who is responsible for what they're using. So we have some branding guidelines. These aim both to enable you to get credit for what you made and to make it clear that Netflix is somehow involved, but at the same time not lead to confused users calling our customer support folks if they have questions about your applications.

Naming and Logo Guidelines

Please see the Naming and Logo Guidelines (PDF) for the full details on the Netflix branding limitations and requirements that you need to be aware of.

Naming:

  • "Netflix" cannot be the first word in your application's name. It can be used in the name of your app, for instance “x for Netflix” or “x with Netflix”, “x’s Netflix Manager”, "your Netflix", etc. This makes it more clear that your application is from you and not from Netflix.
  • You cannot use the letters “Flix” in the name of your application. "Flicks", "Phlix", and other mutated spellings of the syllable are fine in most cases (though "Netflicks" and similar names that might be confused with "Netflix" are not allowed).

Required Attribution:

Your application must feature the Netflix API logo (or “delivered by Netflix” in text) on every page or screen on which the Netflix API has a presence and adjacent to where the implementation appears in your UI. The API logo (or text) must be an active link to http://www.netflix.com

Logos:

Netflix Primary API Logo: use no smaller than 100 px in width

Netflix Secondary API Logo: for use only when space is limited; use no smaller than 16px in width

Is myNetflix acceptable? I have a facebook app that's been out there for a while.

  2. daithi3 years ago

Can we get the logos in either gif, jpg, or png format?

  3. Kallahar3 years ago

To convert the format I opened the "Naming and Logo Guidelines" pdf, took a screenshot and cropped out the image, then resized that. at 100px you can't really read the "delivered by" though...

@David Engfer: I talked to our brand folks here. If you put a space in the middle to change it to "my Netflix", that's ok.

For mobile apps, is it OK if the branding links point to http://www.netflix.com/Mobile?

  6. Adam Durfee3 years ago

@Mike - please still point to http://www.netflix.com. It's more supportable long term from our side. Thanks for asking.

I'm working on a 10ft UI implimentation. If I implemented a hotkey function (ie: if a specific remote button was pressed) that would launch a browser to http://www.netflix.com, would that be acceptible in place of "The API logo (or text) must link to http://www.netflix.com"?

The logo/text would still appear but the user would not need to specifically navigate to it to launch the link. Instead they could launch the link regardless of the active UI element.

Is there a reason why the logo couldn't go to our website on click?

  9. whurlston2 years ago

If I place the logo at the top (as part of the page title), it is not accessible through the navigation. Since I am only developing a plugin and don't have access to the main application, I have no control over that part. I can add command button in the navigational section that can be clicked instead but I would still like to have the logo as part of the title. If it's not possible, I can remove the logo from the title section and just have the text in the navigational portion. I was just hoping.

I meant to say "... don't have access to the main application source code, ..."

It would be fine to have the Netflix attribution with clickable link and the brand somewhere else, if that is the option. Be careful when using the brand in the title area to not imply it is a Netflix app vs. an app "for Netflix", etc.

    Two questions:
    1) According to the Naming and Logo Guidelines, the Add/Add All button images should be available on this site, where are they?
    2) Are there corresponding buttons for Add/Add All to the user's instant queue (if their account supports one)?

  13. Phong Lu2 years ago

Also, do you have a "Add to Instant" button? If not, what branding requirement do I need to follow if I need to create one?

  14. Michael Hart2 years ago

The only buttons we have are those you'd find on our website. There are no branding requirements for buttons.

In our application, the screens are built by the users themselves. Our product is a software based home automaiton system (www.charmedquark.com). We provide a very powerful graphical interface design tool, and we don't have any actual program interfaces. Well we have various tools that are used to build the home automation solution, but the actual screens that the end user sees are not ours, they are built using our tools. We obviously cannot force them to put a logo on their own screens, and whether or not any given user of our system even uses the Netflix API is purely up to them, so it can't be hard coded anywhere. They obviously know where the data is coming from since they are creating the interface themselves and would have to configure their user info in our product to access their Netflix account. So it's not like they don't know where it's coming from. So, in that sense, the need for the logo is kind of meaningless anyway since the customer himself decided to use the Netflix interface or not.

So, what would be the the official stance on this type of product?

  16. Dean Roddey2 years ago

Oh, and also, the number accesses. Is that for our application in general? If so, it won't be very useful. If one of our customers asks us to scan his movies and find metadata for all of them, that could be more than 5000 calls right there from that one user, so it would be kind of useless for us to try to use this API. We can't stop them from doing it, again because they are using our product to build their own solutions. So we don't control how much or little they would use this API.

is ilikeflix.com acceptable? i have created a facebook and Netflix mashup at that url? Thanks!

  18. Johannsg1 year ago

    Hi Ramesh,

ilikeflix.com is not an acceptable application name based on the Netflix Branding requirements. “Flix” is not allowed in the naming of an application. Please go to the Naming section in the Branding Requirements page to learn more.

Thank you for the response. I changed the app name to www.flicksilike.com

Sounds like the following phone apps are in violation of the agove rules:
    http://wp7applist.com/en-US/app/10343/netfliks
    http://wp7applist.com/en-US/app/2583/7flix

Actually, the one called Netflicks is completely impersonating Netflix... just take a look at their logo.
